The primary source of serotonin in the central nervous system (CNS) is the raphe nuclei of the brainstem. Serotonin has modulating effects on the locus ceruleus and its projections to the amygdala [4]. It is also associated with cognitive function in anxiety as well as regulating anxiety and impulsivity in suicidal behavior and other violence [4]. Low levels of serotonin are also associated with dysregulation of other neurotransmitters.
